Because high-performance SUVs are a growing category on the International market there are quite a few manufacturers that are trying to get a shot at it. One of these manufacturers wanted to have a different approach than all the others so instead of fitting their car with a massive petrol engine they instead went for a diesel which is unusual but very interesting nonetheless. The end result is the 2017 Audi SQ7 TDI, a really powerful and efficient high-performance SUV which will hit the market by the end of 2016 and might be the first diesel to go on sale on the US market after VW’s diesel hiatus.
2017 Audi SQ7 TDI – Exterior and Interior Design
The understated design of the 2017 Audi SQ7 TDI carries over from pretty much all the other Audi’s S models meaning that besides a few badges and a slightly lower suspension system, the car is nearly identical to the regular Q7. There are two types of rims, a 20 inch set with high-performance tires and a 22 inch set with slightly better tires for track use.
Like you would expect from an S model, the 2017 Audi SQ7 TDI also comes with an upgraded interior in order to offer a sportier feel than in the regular model. This means that the SQ7 TDI will only be offered in the five-seat configuration and with a set of Ricardo sport seats as standard, so both the driver and its passengers will enjoy the ride without having to hold on during cornering. On top of that, the SQ7 TDI will add to the mix Alcan Tara upholstery and Audi’s latest infotainment system as well.
2017 Audi SQ7 TDI – Engine Performance
While the price might seem a bit steep for a diesel, the 2017 Audi SQ7 TDI employs the most advanced technology in its field and it certainly is one of the most interesting cars Audi makes. The engine itself is a new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 diesel with a sequential turbocharging system where the small turbo will be fed up until around 2.000 rpm while the second turbo will come into play after that.
However, in order to offer a no-lag engine, Audi also installed an electrical supercharger, the first ever fitted to a production car. This is fed by a large 7 kW DC electric motor which is powered by a lithium-ion 48 Volt battery pack inside the trunk. The end result is an engine which has no lag and can deliver up to 435 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The most amount of torque at this rpm for any production car engine to date. The electric supercharger will disengage at high rpm and the two regular turbochargers will take its place.
In order not to carry the battery as a dead weight, the SQ7 TDI also benefits from active roll-bars which use small electric motors to stiffen the car during cornering, a very similar system to the Bentayga. Also, even though it has a regular battery as well, the extra 48 V unit will help with air conditioning when the engine is turned off. So the SQ7 TDI does come with a lot of extras and not just a new engine. The transmission is the same 8 speed automatic as before but it has been tweaked together with its all-wheel drive system in order to offer more grip and a lot more control than before. The official performance figures say that the 2017 Audi SQ7 TDI will hit 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds and it will continue to accelerate up to a limited top speed of 155 mph.
2017 Audi SQ7 TDI – Price and Release Date
The SQ7 TDI has been under development ever since 2014 and we have spy shots of it testing on the Nurburgring ever since the mid of 2015. However, at that time nobody had a clue about the engine fitted to the car but we now know all the details about it. Audi is aiming their SQ7 TDI at cars such as the upcoming Jeep Trackhawk Grand Cherokee and even the Maserati, both being really fast for their class. When it will be released remains to be seen, but we expect it on the market by the end of 2016 or at the start of 2017. The SQ7 TDI is expected to cost more than $90,000.
